CAMERA & LIGHTING TRAINING

Alongside my shooting work I offer bespoke camera and lighting tuition. I'm highly experienced on pretty much all video cameras and shooting situations, and have given training and led workshops pretty much as long as I've been shooting.

My training is 100% bespoke, and tailored to what people want to learn. Often I train with people who have a camera which they feel they're not using to its full potential and want to improve their general shooting skills and knowledge. These could be self-shooters, independent filmmakers, or shooters working in-house at a production company. Sometimes I work with APs or researchers who want to learn to shoot better so they can apply for more shooting roles in TV. Or sometimes it's just amateurs who want to up their skills so they can shoot more useable footage.

Amongst many others, I've taught APs and researchers how to shoot for primetime programmes Escape to the Country and Grand Designs. I've led workshops for the BBC, National Youth Film Academy and FACT Liverpool, and spent a month teaching factual filmmaking in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The cameras that are most in demand at the moment in TV, documentary and branded content are the more recent Sonys (FX3, FX6 & FX9). Alongside those, the Sony FS7, C300 and Blackmagic Cinema cameras are all still widely used by self-shooters.

More often than not I train people on either their own equipment, or equipment they have access to already (through a production company, for instance). Renting equipment is always an option, but the cost may prove prohibitive for some. Training is normally done at your home or office - I don’t have my own studio to run courses from.

If you'd like to discuss training possibilities - on cameras large or small - please get in touch. I do largely one-to-one training but can work with small groups if everyone is roughly at the same level. Rates are flexible but fair, but I’d encourage you to get in touch regardless of your circumstances.

I’m based between Manchester and London these days but regularly travel further afield, and have run training in Liverpool, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Norwich and the midlands.

TESTIMONIALS:

I cannot recommend Jamie's training enough. He's a really knowledgeable DoP but also a great teacher and was able to communicate in a really clear way how I could improve my shooting and lighting. His approach was tailored to my needs, clear, methodical and not at all patronising, and by the end of the day's training I felt 10X more confident in my shooting abilities, particularly around how to set up and light an interview. The results have been immediate in my work, so definitely money well spent.

James Labous, Audio Visual Producer at Parkinson's UK

The training I received from Jamie was absolutely brilliant, I went from little-to-no understanding of Cameras, Lighting and Sound recording, to after two days, having a strong understanding of how the camera works, how to make adjustments, how to light subjects and how to record sound using lapel microphones. By the end of the training I felt capable of filming my own Interviews and short films. The best thing about the training is that not only did Jamie explain to me how the different elements of the camera work, but also why they work in the way they do and how the different elements work together to get the shot you want. I cannot recommend Jamie’s training enough, he is extremely knowledgeable and since my training he has been there to give further advise when I have had a question or two for him.

Jamie delivered training for me and one of my camera operators, specifically on the Sony FX3 and Sony A7III. Although we had been filming professionally for sometime, we generally used to shot a lot of footage in automatic mode, which was starting to have its limitations and issues.

Therefore, I did some research looking for Sony cine camera training and explored getting some professional training. Jamie‘s website, experience, and professionalism all stood out from the crowd, so we booked a day’s training with him.

Jamie came to our studio and delivered a fantastic full day of training. His approach to training is very logical, and empowers the trainees, by making them really think through the processes and why they are doing everything.

We feel as though we have gone from zero to hero in one day! Also, the ongoing support that Jamie has offered and the answers to my questions regarding new equipment, have been invaluable and very much appreciated.

It’s so great to have someone you trust delivering this sort of training in such a clear way. We are always referring to the notes and tips we gained as a result of our training day, and our footage has never looked better. We are putting all of the training to good use currently while shooting a documentary about ocean conservation for the Cayman Islands Government.
